print design

studio project
designing a publication that justifies the end through the means.

intro
a publication for someone i disagree with
Among revolutionary circles there has historically been the belief that the revolution’s ideas belong in some sort of eternal realm, one that calls for the right to murder and destruction. By heralding ideas of a better future as eternal and as absolute truth, the right to murder is justified as it is seen as insignificant when compared to a sort of "New Jerusalem". The means justify the ends.
Starting this project, I was incredibly skeptical of this viewpoint. I wanted to engage with this concept to get a better understanding of where these people are coming from, as someone who feels aligned with a lot of their other leftist beliefs.
the BRIEF
Design a publication for someone you disagree with.
CONSTRAINTS
Approach other viewpoint in good faith.
Do not approach project as a way to push my own agenda.
design intent
Design a publication that explores the idea that "the end justifies the means".
the solution
A zine that highlights thinkers of the French Revolution's Jacobins and the Russian Nihilist movement.
my role
I was the sole designer.
THE SOLUTION
the insurrectionist's handbook

reflections
is it ever justified?
Throughout this project, I started realizing that perhaps there's more grey area than I originally had thought. The incredible amount of violence that occurred during the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution was a result of years of oppression, sometimes violence, although I would still not say is ever really justified, is a natural answer to the world's problems.
If nothing else, I feel like I engaged a lot with those who I disagree with, and through design I was able to obtain a greater understanding with others.
